The object

A framed photograph that opens as a book.

At rest, a Framebook hangs on a wall and reads as a single framed fine-art photograph. Lift the front page and it turns out to be a book. Inside are seven double-page spreads, each one a photograph, any of which can be left showing as the face of the frame until the owner chooses the next.

It works because of how a page is built. Each page is a sandwich: fine art paper, a 0.5mm core of flexible magnetic film, fine art paper again. The film is stiff enough that a page never flops or over-bends. Every page snaps magnetically to the page beneath it, so when the Framebook is closed the whole stack locks flat and the surfaces adhere, producing the appearance of a single glass-clean print.

The book snaps as a unit onto a magnetised back panel inside a white box frame. The magnets in the panel run in horizontally aligned strips, which means the book can only ever seat perfectly straight. There is no crooked resting position. It can be slid left and right along that axis but not tilted. To take it off the wall you rotate it until the aligned fields break, and it releases.

The system was developed over more than a decade by Devis Gastaldon and is patented. There are no screens and no batteries; an embedded NFC tag is used for authentication and book registration. A horizontal tartan band across the frame is the only applied ornament.

Volume One carries seven motor racing photographs by Rainer W. Schlegelmilch, chosen with him from his own archive. It is designed in Switzerland and handcrafted in Italy, in a total edition of 133 across three tiers. Framebook is intended as an ongoing series.

Boilerplate

Frames of Legends makes Framebooks: framed fine-art photographs that open by hand as books. Each page is a sandwich of fine art paper around a 0.5mm core of flexible magnetic film, so pages snap to one another and to a magnetised back panel whose magnets run in horizontal strips. Closed, the stack locks flat and reads as a single print. Open, it is a book of seven double-page spreads, any of which can be displayed as the face of the frame. The magnetic system was developed over more than a decade by Devis Gastaldon and is patented. There are no screens or batteries; an embedded NFC tag handles authentication and book registration. Volume One presents seven motor racing photographs by Rainer W. Schlegelmilch in an edition of 133 copies, designed in Switzerland and handcrafted in Italy. The edition is an official partnership with Race Against Dementia, the charity Sir Jackie Stewart founded after Lady Helen's diagnosis. Frames of Legends is a project by Sandstudio, Lugano. Framebook is planned as a continuing series.

Charitable donation

Frames of Legends: Jackie Stewart is an official partnership with Race Against Dementia, the charity Sir Jackie Stewart founded after Lady Helen's diagnosis. Its mission carries the same urgency he once brought to the track: to win against time. A share of every edition goes to RAD directly.

€ 150 from the sale of each Schlegelmilch Signed Edition copy is donated to Race Against Dementia, a charity registered in England and Wales. In addition, three copies of the edition have been donated directly to the foundation for their own charity auctions, with a combined starting auction value of €21,000.

A collectible becomes a contribution, and a memory worth keeping helps protect the ones that fade.
